Mathematics

mathHelfrich Park STEM Academy has an outstanding mathematics program. Following the EVSC curriculum guide, students explore Indiana State Standards for grades 6, 7, and 8 to best prepare each student for the ISTEP exam. Students are encouraged to think logically about mathematical problems and theory, and these practices are further honed by real life applications.

As a STEM Academy, Helfrich Park is proud to offer one hour of math and one hour of science instruction each school day. This extended time further enhances a child's education in these areas.

Advanced mathematics students will find a variety of offerings. Sixth graders are offered an honors curriculum that combines information from grades 6, 7, and 8. Advanced seventh and eighth graders are offered high school Algebra. Seventh grade students successfully completing Algebra can then take high school geometry as eighth graders here at Helfrich Park.

Additional programs and successes include:

• Participation in the EVSC Regional Math Academic Super Bowl.

• Participation in the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics State Contest.

• Each year, eighth grade students participate in a 'Fall Festival Unit'. This unit coincides with the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival on Franklin Street. As part of the project, students examine the probability involved in games of chance.
